Prevent Everyday Shoulder Tension - Here's how
Many of us complain of sore, tight shoulders.
Whether we are working at the computer,
in the garden,
or just busy and frazzled,
it’s often our poor shoulders that bear the brunt of tension in the body.
The good news is, adjusting posture so that our shoulders remain relaxed and tension free is easy to do.
At Youngify, we call relaxed, tension-free shoulders ‘raw meat’ shoulders.
It mightn’t sound that appealing… but bear with us!
First, let’s get a feel for what we DON’T want: shoulder tension!
Try this: push the shoulders up toward the ears and tense the muscles.
Now, feel along the top of the shoulder (where the seam of a t-shirt runs – from the base of the neck to the arm).
It probably feels tight and ropey, right?
This tightness is what causes pain and ultimately leads to injury.
Now, for the fun part (see our video demonstrating the actions).
Sit in a relaxed position.
From this relaxed starting point, gently roll the shoulders up and back so there is a sense of openness in the chest.
Don’t push or strain, and remember to breathe down into the belly.
Now, feel the shoulders (along the t-shirt seam) again.
Notice the difference?
They should feel soft and a little springy—like wearing shoulder pads made out of raw sausages… or a couple of juicy raw steaks!
Lightly set the shoulders in this position ensures they remain free from strain and tension.
