This client's story is about the MRI not showing the Main Problem.
In the previous blog, I explained what a shock it was for me to learn that MRIs and other scans can sometimes show us coincidental problems.
Whether a problem seen on a scan, like an MRI, is the Main Problem or not can be revealed by testing where the nervous system is protecting.
This client's MRI (image) showed a disc herniation in the Low Back–the black material within the red circles.
These are two images of the same spine, slightly different positions of 'slices' of images.
The black-coloured material is showing the disc ligaments have torn and the contents of the disc spreading out (herniating), and no longer contained within the disc.
This client had severe back pain and was getting common physiotherapy with a focus on back treatment and back exercises while trying to return to training.
He wasn't able to train or compete in his sport for multiple months.
This type of problem would normally block a person from training or competing again.
If we believed that the MRI and back pain indicated the Main Problem in every case then I think this client would still be suffering.
Once we took into account what his nervous system was protecting we treated this.
He returned to training pain-free with full strength and full flexibility–within two weeks.
He went on to win two Brisbane Titles in his sport over the following 2 years.
On reflection, we can see that the disc problem shown on MRI was a coincidental finding.
It's cases like this that make me appreciate neuroscience.
At Youngify, we consider MRI scans and problem solve where the Main Problem is by testing the nervous system.
We do it this way because it feels much better to help our community in a more progressive way.
